🌿 Bex’s Story - A Survivor Case Study on Learning from Systemic Failure

We are honoured to share this case study, contributed through the Survivors Action Forum.

@bex story reflects lived experiences of harm spanning from early childhood into adulthood, alongside repeated failures across multiple systems including education, healthcare, mental health services, and safeguarding.

Throughout her journey, disclosures were often minimised, dismissed, or not acted upon, resulting in delayed protection, misdirected care, and compounded trauma.

This case study has been shared to support learning, reflection, and change.

Why This Case Study Matters

Bex’s experience highlights important patterns that many survivors face within systems:

  • Disclosures not being believed or escalated
  • Trauma being misunderstood or misdiagnosed
  • Services focusing on symptoms rather than lived experience
  • Unsafe or retraumatising environments within support systems
  • A lack of trauma-informed, survivor-centred responses

It also shows the difference that safe, validating, and advocacy-led care can make when it is provided.

Survivor Contribution & Impact

We extend our sincere gratitude to Bex for sharing her experience.

Her contribution has directly informed the development of survivor-led resources for professionals, now available within the BeyondTrauma Advisory Network (BTAN).

These resources are supporting:

  • Improved trauma-informed practice
  • Greater awareness of systemic harm
  • Safer, more responsive services
